The 1st Technical Meeting on Establishment and Operation of ECO Smuggling and Customs Offences Data Bank was held in Ankara on February 20th 2018
The first meeting on Establishment and Operation of ECO Smuggling and Customs Offences Data Bank was held in Ankara, Turkey, on February 20th 2018. It was organized by the Ministry of Customs and Trade of the Republic of Turkey by the participation of representatives of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the Republic of Turkey, who are Contracting Parties to the Agreement on Establishment and Operation of ECO Smuggling and Customs Offences Data Bank.
The meeting was chaired by Head of Department Ms. Didem DİRLİK SONGÜR. The representatives from Directorate General for EU and External Relations, Directorate General for Customs Enforcement, Directorate General for Risk Management and Department of Information Technology also attended the meeting.
During the meeting, Contracting Parties introduced their national smuggling data banks by presentations. A preliminary simulation of the Data Bank was introduced by the Ministry of Customs and Trade.
As a result of the meeting, the participants agreed on July1st 2018 as the operation date of the Data Bank and the Parties also agreed that data will be entered in the Data Bank retrospectively as of January 1st 2018. The participants also agreed that a training for the trainers regarding the Data Bank for the personnel of the Contracting Parties will be organized by the Ministry of Customs and Trade of Republic of Turkey.
The Agreement on Establishment and Operation of ECO Smuggling and Customs Offences Data Bank entered into force on December 30th 2017, with the purpose of efficient reduction of customs offences and smuggling in the ECO region by data sharing among the Contracting Parties. The Data Bank is also expected to contribute in effective fight against financial sources of terrorism.
