On the occasion of the 129th/130th Sessions of the WCO Council, on Saturday 8 July 2017, Undersecretary of Ministry of Customs and Trade of the Republic of Turkey Mr. Cenap AŞCI and WCO Secretary General Mr. Kunio MIKURIYA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Customs and Trade of Turkey and the World Customs Organization regarding the establishment of a World Customs Organization Regional Dog Training Centre in Ankara, Turkey.
Accepting that training of detector dogs is undeniably a professional area of enforcement activities, the Ministry of Customs and Trade has full of experience in canine enforcement activities since 1998. After a long period of collaboration with Turkish security forces in this domain, the Ministry opened its own Dog Training Center in Akyurt, Ankara on 23 September 2014.
Until today, Customs Dog Training Center has been conducting intense practical and theoretical training courses for dog handlers and dogs on specialized areas.
As a significant step forward for further cooperation area among WCO member countries in the Europe Region, this MoU with WCO will serve to collaborate on sharing experiences and training in detector dogs and further to boost co-operation and increase enforcement capacities of countries within the Europe Region.
With this Agreement and our enhanced partnership, we hope to achieve our vision of a secure region with having deep knowledge and experiences in fight with smuggling.
The MoU entered into force on 8th July 2017.
