The 129th/130th Annual Sessions of the World Customs Organization’s Council – the Organization’s highest decision-making body – were held in Brussels from 6 to 8 July 2017 with the delegation of the Ministry of Customs and Trade of the Republic of Turkey headed by Undersecretary Mr. Cenap AŞCI.
Discussions focused on a number of key issues: trade facilitation, including the WCO Mercator Programme, following membership and membership of Kosovo to WCO, security initiatives; combating illicit financial flows; and customs-tax-cooperation, in particular the challenges and opportunities from a Customs perspective.
Members of the Council also recognized the two reservations limit decision for HS Comittee with a view to speeding up the decision-making process by limiting the number of reservations.
The WCO Secretary General and our Undersecretary Mr.AŞCI also signed MoU on 8 July 2017 as regards the accreditation of the Dog Training Center of Turkey by the WCO.
In addition, WCO members depicted the road map for the forthcoming period through shaping WCO structures and new appointments in order to provide effective performance of customs.
Along the Directors General of Customs representing 182 Members of the WCO, other representatives from the international institutions and private sectors attended the Meeting as observers.
This year The WCO also celebrated its 65th anniversary.
The 2017 Sessions included the election of Mr. Enrique Canon, Director General of Uruguay Customs as Chairperson of the Council. It was agreed that for 2017-2018, the Vice-Chair of the Council for the Europe Region will be held by Mr. Ruslan DAVYDOV, Deputy Head of the Federal Customs Service of the Russian Federation.
